I've run into a nasty bug while trying to install a Linux guest using
VMware Server inside a kvm guest (full dmesg attached and recreate
instructions below bug).

Here is the setup:

IBM LS21 - 2 socket AMD Host, 64-bit mode, kvm-43 on 2.6.22, 4G ram

1. Apply set_cr3 gp fault patch to kvm, rebuild and insert modules.

2. Install Ubuntu Fiesty i386 into a KVM guest

    1. qemu-img create -f qcow2 vmware-server.img 50G
    2. qemu-system-x86_64 -hda vmware-server.img -m 512 -no-rtc -net tap -net nic,model=rtl8139 -vnc :1 -cdrom /home/rharper/ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso -boot d

2. Download FC-6 i386 disc 1 from some fedora mirror
   http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/core/6/i386/iso/FC-6-i386-disc1.iso

3. Boot Feisty guest and install VMware Server following this guide:
   http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-vmware-server-from-canonical-commercial-repository-in-ubuntu-feisty.html 

   ./qemu-system-x86_64 -hda vmware-server.img -m 512 -no-rtc -net tap
   -net nic,model=rtl8139 -vnc :1 -cdrom FC-6-i386-disc1.iso -boot c

4. Reboot and Run Vmware-server tool (Applications->System Tools->VMWare
      Server Console)

5. Create New Virtual Machine:
   1. Typical
   2. Linux
   3. Red Hat Linux
   4. Default location is ok
   5. Use NAT
   6. 8G is fine, don't allocate and don't split into 2G
   7. Finish

6. Stop guest and rerun qemu but with -snapshot (so I don't corrupt the
      guest disk)

   ./qemu-system-x86_64 -hda vmware-server.img -snapshot -m 512 -no-rtc \
   -net tap -net nic,model=rtl8139 -vnc :1 -cdrom FC-6-i386-disc1.iso

6. Power on VM
   1. Hit enter at Fedora Boot menu
   2. Skip disk check
   3. Wait for anaconda to start to load - gets to a black screen

At this point, sometimes the bug will trip, other times, I need to do
some work in the host (tar tzvf kvm-43.tar.gz) a couple times and it
trips.

Hi Ryan,

I had a similar problem yesterday with Xen.  I posted it to the Xen 
mailing list.  Now I'm hopeful of try this in KVM, but it looks like you 
aren't having much luck.  (stopping on anaconda rings a bell)

Here is part of my post:

    Xen HVM = CentOS 4.5
    running VMware Server 1.0.4 (not VMware WS 6.0 image compatible)

    It will start a CentOS 4.5 install (inside VMware) but a ways into
    it, it says it didn't detect any hard drives.  So I choose a driver
    module it suggests.  A few more seconds into it I get "Running
    anacoda, the CentOS-4 i386 system install - please wait..."  The
    cursor is flashing for about 5 seconds, then stops flashing. 
    VMware's VM is dead at that point.

I don't know if this helps anyone but... I guess I can commiserate.

Can you reproduce this with AUDIT turned on (top of mmu.c)? AUDIT is 
very slow, so it's recommended to reduce guest memory as much as possible.

Working on it -- running for the better part of today with 256MB and I'm
still booting up the guest.  I'll let you know how things go tomorrow.
Any thoughts on how to speed audit runs up other than lower guest
memory?

savevm right before you're about to launch your test w/o audit enabled.  
then launch with loadvm and audit enabled and hit <enter> to launch your 
test.

Hmm.  Reduce the number of shadow page tables (KVM_NUM_MMU_PAGES).  You
can also turn a few passes off in the main audit function, but that of
course reduces its effectiveness.

btw, the error may occur before the guest fails, so keep an eye on
dmesg.  Once it hits things will slow down even more due to a flood of
printks.

That was highly effective in getting as close to the fault as possible.

We need to bracket the error so that we know exactly where the problem 
starts to appear, and then enable debug (conditionally on rip and/or 
cr2) so that we have a full trace of what happens.
