Under a linux guest with the acpi package , it can be done with libvirt,
and it's work fine.

http://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html :
"||ACPI is useful for power management, for example, with KVM guests it 
is required for graceful shutdown to work."

Maybe the same can be done with windows guest.
I've never tested.
