This is something that's plagued me for many versions. I've read the
bug reports where this was marked as fixed back in version 12.x

Currently with Kernel 2.6.37.4 64bit.

Also - with qemu-kvm and this AMD x4 620 I cannot use phenom nor host
cpu. Core2duo works fine. On a core2duo (e8400/e8500) all cpu options
are supported.

0.12 is ancient.  Please give 0.14 a try.
