Wow, awesome stuff Jiri! Congrats!

I know mbligh wanted something on this lines, and I think it makes 
perfect sense. However, we need to do some careful review, unittesting 
and testing of these changes. Also, we need to put documentation in shape.

Also, it is a good opportunity to ask our downstream parties and 
contributors whether they like this unification proposal or not. Copying 
some people that might be interested in take a look and express their 
concerns.

My idea is to stage your changes in one of my personal git repo on 
github (branch merge-server-client) and go iterating from there.
