Is this normal? When I restarted KVM afterwards, it seemed to restart
the installation process at a point when a real machine might have
rebooted anyway.

This was the old behavior before we had windows restart support.
The latest kvm should be able to boot normally. What version are you
running?
Anyway the workaround is just to re-execute the cmd line with boot -c.

Hmm, whatever is in the feisty beta. apt-cache show kvm reports the
version as:

  16-1ubuntu1

which doesn't look very likely :(

Does that do anything other than tell it to boot off the virtual hard
disk?

I apparently have windows installed now; is that something I ought to
do every time anyway?

Nope. -boot c is the default so it's identical to not passing any -boot
parameter at all.

Nope, you're fine.

kvm-18 is the first version to support guest reboot on Intel.

Do not meddle in the internals of kernels, for they are subtle and quick to panic.
