Serious question: has anyone considered changing the name of this
project? Finding information about kvm on the web is extremely
frustrating due to the enormous number of pages related to KVM switches
and the heavily overlapping target audience (people who want to run
multiple OSes). I figure a name change would be good for reducing the
developer support burden as well as for your users.

I don't think it is such a big issue. The first time I googled for any
kvm-specific info,
I got frustrated, that's true. But then I just started typing "Kernel
Virtual Machine", and everything
went fine.
Furthermore, we're not the first word with (at least) double meaning
in the world.
At least there's (apearantly) no porn meaning for it.

Really, everyone types out that long phrase when asking questions?
Seems somehow unlikely (notice that I didn't). That said, I'll be
trying that next.

No, but as I said, the target audience (and application area) overlaps
so heavily that even adding other relevant search terms usually doesn't
eliminate the chaff.

I seem to recall from back when some half-baked
software known as "windows" which was introduced
by that name despite existing software at the
time using the same moniker. Doesn't appear to
have impacted its viral propagation in the world
too much.
Give it some time. I think it is a safe bet for
the hypervisor by that name to be more ubiquitous
than the like named console multiplexer box.

No, I type "kernel kvm" or do "kvm -switch" to remove pages that talk about
KVM switches. I have also thought the name to be unfortunate, but you just
need to ask Google a better question.

Yes.

In many ways kvm is a horrible choice. I'm not sure a name change is
possible at this stage, though.
I've thought of 'slice' (which rhymes nicely with some Qumranet
products, and so may not be the first choice for other kvm developers),
but that may not be the googliest name either.
Perhaps one day the distinction between kvm and linux will disappear,
and the hypervisor will be known simply as 'Linux'.

I have a truly marvellous patch that fixes the bug which this
signature is too narrow to contain.

No, and I can't claim to have come up with anything apt.

Thanks for a thoughtful answer, Avi.
