What happens: Kernel logs message to journal, kvm VMs no longer work.
What should happen: Kernel boots and kvm VMs start.

I would attach my journal, except it is literally full of MB of lines just
repeating what is in the summary:

Archived and active journals take up 3.9G on disk.

Unless you're trying to do PCI device assignment, KVM doesn't have any
dependency or interaction with the IOMMU. General IOMMU issues would probably
be better served reporting them to the IOMMU mailing list:
https://lists.linuxfoundation.org/mailman/listinfo/iommu
If you are attempting to do PCI device assignment, please provide details
including VM configuration (XML or qemu launch scripts) and dmesg prior to the
AMD-Vi spew.

Forgive my ignorance, but does your guidance also apply when using virtio

Neither virtio nor numad do anything with the IOMMU (AMD-Vi) either.

FWIW, setting
iommu=soft
got rid of the journal spam in my case (found here)
full disclosure: i don't care about virtualisation (i only ever messed around
with it to check out gnome boxes) and i've disabled kvm and kvm_amd (even
blacklisted the modules in a file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist_kvm.conf), even
disabled virtualisation in BIOS while debugging this issue (none of which
worked)…
good luck with fixing this, guys!
regards,
M.

There was a patch posted at [1] which was merged as
commit cbf3ccd09d683abf1cacd36e3640872ee912d99b
Author: Joerg Roedel <jroedel@suse.de>
Date: Tue Oct 20 14:59:36 2015 +0200
iommu/amd: Don't clear DTE flags when modifying it
During device assignment/deassignment the flags in the DTE
get lost, which might cause spurious faults, for example
when the device tries to access the system management range.
Fix this by not clearing the flags with the rest of the DTE.

Can anyone mark this resolved?
