I mistyped the commands I entered. In fact, you should read:
iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -p icmp --icmp-type echo-request \
-d $TESTMACHINE1 -j MARK --set-mark 1
iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -p icmp --icmp-type echo-request \
-d $TESTMACHINE2 -j MARK --set-mark 2
