Try using a > real computer. Thanks Tommy, but that's not an option; I don't have access to a "real" computer < 80386, hence wanting to use Bochs. However, I can (for the interest and amusement of everyone reading, no doubt) confirm that it works just fine on MS Virtual PC 2004... so I better go buy floppy disks before they get abolished :) Expect me to ask lots of dumb questions as I get underway with this stuff.
