EtLinux should be the best solution for you : http://www.etlinux.org
It's developed by an Italian society, PROSA, and it could run in 2 MB RAM and
2 MB of disk space (hard disk, compact flash, smartcard or similar).
Some parts of the system are re-written in TCL in order to save space on disk.
muLinux (http://mulinux.sunsite.dk) needs at least 4 MB RAM and it's based on
Linux 2.0.36; it's really complete and you can use X, SSH, VNC, Java and many
other things on your computer.
SmallLinux (http://www.superant.com/smalllinux/) needs at least 2 MB RAM and
it's based on Linux 2.0.0 : you could do some basilar jobs with it.
