You really wouldn't want to run X at 800x600 though 'cause it's been designed for megapixel displays (1024x768x1) from day one. Also 'cause VNC prefers truecolour displays the minimum depth is probably 8-bit; as I remember the 1Mb (1024x768x8) graphic cards were around at about the time of 286 but I don't suppose they're gonna be that fast ...
