Before I discovered the problem with my computer, I'd run a kernel
compile that brought the core temperature up to over 75 C. A Celeron
reaches critical temperature with risk of heat death at 70 C. You can't
assume that all computers are going to have the same safeguards.

No. Worst that can happen is that your machine powers off. And thats
after machine already has at least one hardware bug.
