Hi List,
I have read info in many places trying to find the answers to getting
acpi to run on my SuSE 8.1 Pro installation. Everything else works
great. I have read that SuSE 8.1 is supposed to support ACPI right off
the install.... I have the acpi package installed through yast but other
than that there is no evidence anything is working.
My lapto[p supports acpi so that should not be a problem.
I have tried acpi=on in my boot and that makes no difference.
I have tried following the steps at linux-laptop.net for any acer
laptops close to my model and the instructions are sketchy at best.
Because the laptop works so good as is... I am hesitant to start farting
around with it... but I thought I would come to the ACPI EXPERTS and ask
the question... is there a step by step on how to take my
kernel(2.4.19-4GB), and recompile with acpi support? Am I missing
something and SuSE 8.1 really does support acpi right out of the box?
I tried SuSE support, they said "Sorry, out of the scope of free
support" LOL..
I appreciate any advise/help I can get.
Until then... I have to watch the time as my battery only lasts about
2.5 hours :)
Thanks
Preston

After installing acpid, run "insserv acpid" and "rcacpid start"
(or reboot).
This will load processor/fan/thermal/... modules.
But ACPI on SuSE 8.1 is from August 2002, which is quite old. You can also
try a kernel from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/next/, which should
have newer ACPI included.

ok,
I have downloaded and installed the latest RPM k_deflt-2.4.20-62.src.rpm
from the location ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/next/
I now read kernel version 2.4.20-4GB / i686
All power management areas still report the following:
Your computer seems to have a partial ACPI installation
brobably ACPI was enabled, but some of the sub-options
were not enabled - you need to enable at least 'AC Adaptor'
and 'Control Method Battery' and rebuild your kernel.
I also notice that since the upgrading of my kernel I get some driver
errors on bootup for devices that are not on my system... and my desktop
does not respond at all. So all my desktop contents are not showing
unless I navigate to my ~/Desktop folder manually and right clicking on
the desktop does nothing.
Thanks again for any help
Preston
