I'm forwarding this message that I sent to acpi-sppt because I believe
it's a bug. Feedback greatly appreciated.
TIA.

Hi, I'm not sure if this has been noticed by any users or not. I don't
think so because I did a lot of Googling some months ago and I've been
also searching thoroughly through the mailing list archives to no avail.
I have a Toshiba DynaBook V4/493PMHW laptop (lspci -vvxxx output
attached) and when I compile ACPI with 'Processor support' (either with
or without 'Thermal zone'), when my computer serves data through my
ethernet card (a Realtek 8139) I get the following error (extracted from
/var/log/syslog):
May 31 01:35:33 roamer kernel: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out
May 31 01:35:33 roamer kernel: eth0: Tx queue start entry 48 dirty
entry 44.
May 31 01:35:33 roamer kernel: eth0: Tx descriptor 0 is 00002000.
(queue head)
May 31 01:35:33 roamer kernel: eth0: Tx descriptor 1 is 00002000.
May 31 01:35:33 roamer kernel: eth0: Tx descriptor 2 is 00002000.
May 31 01:35:33 roamer kernel: eth0: Tx descriptor 3 is 00002000.
May 31 01:35:33 roamer kernel: eth0: Setting half-duplex based on
auto-negotiated partner ability 0000.
This doesn't happen with outbound connections, only when I act as a
server. I guess it occurs when I have to send a lot of data. But just
doing a ssh to my computer from another one and leaving a key pressed
for a couple of lines will cause this. The communication is interrupted
for maybe 10 seconds until /dev/eth0 comes up again (last line of the
log). When I act as an ftp/scp server after some 5-10MB of data (maybe
less) it comes to a stall.
The second line can vary with dirty entries in the 80s or 100s, but
always the first one is 4 numbers greater than the previous one, e.g.:
May 31 01:35:33 roamer kernel: eth0: Tx queue start entry 86 dirty
entry 82.
When I disable 'Processor support' under ACPI this doesn't happen at
all. I had this problem with 2.4.19 and now again with 2.4.20 so I
suppose it went unnoticed. Is this a bug? Should I send it to the devel
list?
Any help greatly appreciated. TIA.

Salut Alfonso,
I am not a developer,... but I would be interssted to see, what
cat cat /proc/interrupts
will say, in both cases. And what acpi-support did you use? The acpi that
comes with the kernel, or a developping version?

I also tried the latest patch for 2.4.21-rc3 and obtained the same
behaviour. That's why I thought that it had passed unnoticed...
Thanks.

I have attached a couple of files. The 'interrupts' file is the output
from 'cat /proc/interrupts' and I've also included the output of 'cat
/proc/pci' in 'pci'. I've read some doc from the ACPI website and I've
seen that sometimes there are conflicting devices on the same IRQ, or at
least that's what I got to understand. In my case it seems that the same
IRQ is used by the FireWire interface, but I haven't got it compiled. If
I do, as the driver is still experimental, whenever there's some network
traffic (at boot up when getting an IP address from my DHCP server) it
produces an awful lot of error messages and it goes havoc. I've included
a sample in the file 'ieee1394'. Maybe this can be helpful. However,
what I don't understand is why if I unload the processor module there is
no problem at all. I still believe that there must be something else
going on.

So far I have tried 2.4.20 with ACPI patch, 2.4.21-rc3 with ACPI patch,
2.4.21-rc7 with Alan Cox patch (it includes ACPI) and 2.5.70 with Alan
Cox patch. All of them have this same bug. Not different at all.
