Hi!
yes kernel 2.4.20-8 have at least "6" months and  IIRC (if I recall
correctly), doesn't have new acpi CA, is old ACPI and it does not
maintained.
Applying acpi-patches is not possible, directly or I don't recommend, 
so you can try use the main stock kernel from kernel.org.
