I have a laptop. It has brightness control buttons on it, which,
unfortunately, don't work under Linux. I was wondering. Are backlight and
brightness controlled by ACPI as well? How would one go about controlling
them?

They /can/ be controlled by ACPI, but aren't always. It might be worth
trying the patch on http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1944 .
Alternatively, if you have an Asus/Medion or Toshiba laptop then there
are kernel drivers that support their hotkeys.
