(The following is valid for a Samsung P30 Centrino laptop, but might
work on any Samsung P3x)

Hello all,

after reading about some guys using vesa driver hacks to revive their
i810 card, I played a bit with X and the vesa driver.

What you need:

- XFree86 4.3+  (didn't test Xorg, but may work)
- dummydriver [1]
- boot-vga-bios [2]
- a kernel patch for PCI resume (attached)
- a barebone kernel .config (attached)

How to revive the monitor:

- Start X11 with radeon driver (DRI can be enabled) on :0
- Start X11 with *vesa* driver on :1 (use X
-xf86config /etc/X11/$some_XF86Config)
- Change to VT1 (chvt 1)
- Make sure that "dummydriver" is loaded
- Sync your disks (can't hurt heh)
- Enter S3 (echo -n mem >/sys/power/state)
- Hit the power button to resume
- Run boot-vga-bios (if you don't, the machine will freeze during the
next step)
- Just ignore the segfault it is causing
- Change to the running *vesa* X11 screen (eg: chvt 8)
- The vesa screen will crash and throw you back to VT1 - that's no
problem at all!
- The crashing vesa session revives your Monitor :)
- Change to the radeon X11 screen to re-init AGP (this is a *must*)
- Done !
- Repeat from step 2 ;)

I did the above about 20 times, and the machine resumed perfectly. It
didn't crash / freeze once! Even DRI worked after a resume heh. 

Notes:
- I have attached a *very* crude s3 script, which I used to debug the
video. Take it as
  an example on how to write your own.
- As I'm running the tests with a barebone kernel, I still need to check
which drivers
  must be unloaded before suspending. The one i know right now are:
	- ALSA or OSS i8x0 sound driver (freezes your machine on resume, unload
first)
	- radeonfb, vesafb (same, don't use it)
	- ATI binary fglx driver (need to verify that)
- The kernel patch is rather crude. I know that. If you don't apply it,
your
  machine will freeze during resume, no matter what you do.
  I need to investigate further what exactly causes the freeze. I guess
it's
  the pci_dev->is_enabled call. Everyone "in the know" will see that i
basically
  re-implement pci_default_resume for the video card, just w/o the
checks.
  The normal pci_default_resume will freeze the machine if it accesses
the video card.
  Please don't bitch that the patch sucks. Hell, I don't even speak C.
  It Works For Me (TM)


Now it's time to find out how the vesa driver revives the screen during
the crash and
implement that in boot-vga-bios (or the radeon driver). It would make
life a lot easier :)

The last entries in the logfile of the vesa X session are:
(II) VESA(0): VBESetVBEMode failed
(EE) VESA(0): Set VBE Mode failed!

Well, it would sure help if ATI would add a *working* resume support to
their driver.
Or just the details on how to POST a $RANDOM_ATI_CARD from scratch w/o
BIOS.
There are rumors that the windows driver does just that. 

That's just one more reason why ATI sucks on Linux compared to NVidia. I
heard NVidia at least added some resume code to their driver.

If the ATI driver situation doesn't change soon, that was sure as hell
my first *and* *last* computer with ATI hardware. Ever.

Can you try the attached kernel patch instead of my dummydriver? It fixes a 
problem with my soundcard which I originally worked around with dummydriver.

your patch works perfectly. The ALSA modules no longer need to be
unloaded before suspending. I've just resumed with a fully working
kernel under X11 with a lot of apps running, resuming was a breeze :)
