Try getting vbetool from http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~mjg59/vbetool and
build it. On boot (before X is started), do

vbetool vbestate save >/var/run/vbestate

In your suspend script, chvt away from X. In your resume script, run

vbetool vbestate restore </var/run/vbestate
vbetool dpms on

and then chvt back to X. That seems to work on a large number of
machines.
