Compiling without APIC support solved the locking up problem :)

Thanks for all your help on this matter Matthias.

When the kernel booted up, there were a few errors concerning ACPI on the kernel logs. I don't know about their significance, but here are the two lines with errors:
Apr 3 17:55:42 localhost kernel: psparse-1133: *** Error: Method execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0.MC97._PRW] (Node ddefaaa8), AE_NOT_EXIST
Apr 3 17:55:42 localhost kernel: uteval-0154: *** Error: Method execution failed [\_SB_.PCI0.MC97._PRW] (Node ddefaaa8), AE_NOT_EXIST

I've included my system log file as an attachment in case it is needed.

Thanks again for your help on solving this problem.

Cheers,
Fred
