Hi,

I've just compiled 2.4.20 + the 2002112 patch for 2.4.20rc3 + the cpufreq for
rc3 on my Dell Inspiron 2650 (Mobile P4 1.9GHz. A few weeks work and a few
things don't :)

* I can successfully sleep and wakeup from S1, even while in X, which is 
wonderful. (great to see it working, thanks to everybody who's contributed!). 
However, the screen does not seem to be turned off, only much darker -- I can 
still see the screen albeit darkly when the system is supposedly asleep.

Also, entering S1 means that the system clock seems to stop. For example, if I 
watch the clock on KDE's Kicker, and enter S1, then the system will show the 
same time when it wakes up as when it entered sleep.

Also, the processor fan continues to run even when in S1. The fan stops while 
in standby mode in XP, IIRC, which is what I expect -- the processor is 
halted (I think) so it should cool down, so there's no need t

* dmesg reveals a few errors, whether the are important or not I do not know:

I'm current using NVidia's propreitary kernel modules, I'd be happy to re-test
with this module not loaded if that is likely to make any difference.

* Reading battery information partially works:

* The /proc/acpi/ac_adapter and fan (and possibly other) directories are
empty.


* Slightly OT for here, but controlling the processor speed using cpufreq and
/proc/cpufreq seems to work perfectly, with /proc/cpuinfo reporting that the
speed varies between 1.2 and 1.9, depending whether I ask for performance or
max battery. Whether it actually will increase battery life needs more
investigation :)

I remember there being a acpi->cpufreq patch -- has that been accepted into
the main acpi patch yet? Does the patch only switch between the maximum and
minimum speeds, or other speeds in between, as the SpeeedStep driver for XP
does?

That didn't seem to work - it just produced an empty file for some reason... 
However a cp /proc/acpi/dsdt /home/chris/dsdt.dat did. Attached.

I've now enabled verbose acpi debugging in my kernel, and a new dmesg 
reflecting this is attached.

Argh, stupid VMware filling up the buffer with error messages regarding fd0 :(

However the end of the file shows the error messages that are reported if I
remove and re-insert the battery.

Success! That's fixed the problem -- the battery is now recognised correctly 
when it's removed and re-inserted. Many thanks. Thats one of the problems

only much darker -- I can still see the contents of the screen albeit darkly 
when the system is supposedly asleep.

* Entering S1 halts the system clock so the time when leaving S1 is the same 
as when it entered S1

* The CPU & hard disk fan seems to continue to run while in S1

* The /proc/acpi/ac_adapter, fan, thermal_zone and power_resource directories 
are empty.

That's very normal on the Dell.  If you ever figure out how to actually turn off
the backlight, please let me know.

As it should.  You have to reset the clock.

I've never had fan & thermal_zones successfully on my i2500, and never even seen
a "power_resource", but ac_adapter works fine.

Ah, this reminds me of something. The binary only NVidia (while I've heard of 
many people with trouble them, they've been excellent for me and give me 
decent rates in Return to Castle Wolfenstein) force apm to be disabled, 
because it intereferes with AGP or something. Thanfully this is done in the 
open-source interface bit. I'll see if making some changes to the interface 
(just a case of changing some function return calues) code makes it work any 
better.

"hwclock --hctosys" on leaving S1? *Wonders how to make it do this

I'm not going to have this machine much longer because after a length battle 
with them including starting legal proceedings (the memory was(is) faulty and 
g++ kept suffering from Internal Compiler errors) I'm getting a refund. 
Hopefully the new machine will work as well or better :)

It should generate an event to /proc/acpi/event, and the easiest way to use that
is to use acpid.  check syslog for messages from acpid, which correspond to
unprocessed events.

iirc, sometimes you might only get an event on pushing the suspend button, in
which case you run a script that completes the suspend, then sleeps a couple of
seconds, then runs hwclock to reset the clock.

Hrmm. I'm using the Nvidia drivers on a Geforce 2 MX at work and a Geforce 4
Ti4400 at home, and the xset dpms stuff works fine for me. I think monitor
support is more of a factor than video card support.

Aha. Just installed acpid now. Looks quite nifty. /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh 
originally just said "shutdown -h 0" which I've changed to say "dcop 
- --all-users kdesktop KDesktopIface logout" so I get the KDE logout dialog 
when the power button is pressed. Nice :)

The machine helpfully doesn't have a suspend button, only a power button.
