I'm trying to get ACPI working on my Compaq Evo N800c. Actually, I
should say that I have it working, or at least it's loading and I'm
seeing entries in /proc/acpi, but whenever I boot with a kernel with
ACPI enabled, it breaks PCMCIA. The drivers attempt to load, but can't
find the cardbus controller, which doesn't even show up in lspci. Is
this a common problem? I've tried about 3 different kernel versions
with both the stock ACPI and the patches from sourceforge, and they all
behave the same way. Any tips on where I should look to find a fix?
Thanks
Mike

Mike,
I have got a Evo N800v which should not be much different from N800c. I would
say my acpi is fully functional (besides a small problem with CPU performance
status: it works fine, changing its status when on AC or battery, but is not
reported correctly in /proc/acpi).
I don't see your problem. Actually, I've never tried to use PCMCIA since
I don't need it, but here is the output of cardctl and lspci.
Regards,
Daniele

Hi Daniele,
I also have an Evo N800v RedHat 9
ATI.2 XFree patch
Still with kernel 2.4.21-pre4 and its acpi version, cpufreq patch.
With the latest version 2.4.21-rc1 and latest acpi patch the laptop gets
really hot.
kernel 2.5.68 no display on my radeon
-Fn F7 and Fn F8 not working
-lidswitch not working, but if working display doesn't come back
-irda not working
-acpi performance not working (known problem)
Anyone here that can help
Hilbert

Hi Hilbert,
> I also have an Evo N800v RedHat 9
I am using RH 8, I tried RH9 for a while, but some things did not work as
before... didn't have much time and came back to 8.
> ATI.2 XFree patch
I am not using it. What is that for?
> Still with kernel 2.4.21-pre4 and its acpi version, cpufreq patch.
I am using 2.4.20 with acpi-20021212-2.4.20 and custom dsdt. You can download
my custom dsdt (with the usual "use at your own risk" disclaimer) at
www-dimat.unipv.it/~boffi/compaq/custom-dsdt.hex
> With the latest version 2.4.21-rc1 and latest acpi patch the laptop gets
> really hot.
For me (2.4.20) this is not the case. The fan control seems OK.
(CPU temperature usually is around 50 C, other two thermal zones much cooler
BTW does anybody know what the other two thermal zones are?;
CPU reached once 70 C during heavy work... critical temperature is 93 C)
> kernel 2.5.68 no display on my radeon
Never tried. For me the graphic card was detected out of the box (with nice
resolution 1400x1050).
Only annoying thing: screen looses horizontal sincronization when switching
between different virtual consoles crt-alt-F1/8, if you keep switching it
comes back to the good sincronization.
You can download my X config at
www-dimat.unipv.it/~boffi/compaq/XF86Config
> -Fn F7 and Fn F8 not working
This works fine for me (didn't work with RH9)
> -lidswitch not working, but if working display doesn't come back
This works fine. With RH9 I think the display didn't come back, but switching
to a different console made it work.
> -irda not working
Never tried, don't need it
> -acpi performance not working (known problem)
Well, it works but you cannot monitor it or change its status.
In addition to that, I have, in particular, swsusp working fine; power, lid,
suspend buttons working OK.
I would like to have some hotkeys working (in particular the volume control),
but I don't think this is a acpi related problem.

Thanks for the reply. Your lspci output looks almost identical to mine,
except that I have a lucent winmodem. I was going to ask what
distribution you are running, but you mentioned RH8 in a later email.
I'll guess I'll give that a shot, although I would hope there wouldn't
be too drastic a change between compiling 2.4.20 under RH8 and compiling
2.4.20 under RH9.
Thanks
Mike

I'd bet that Daniele is using a "fixed" DSDT... Check the archives for
how to add one to your kernal. It'll cure things like the laptop
getting hot.

Sorry,my dsdt is also modified, the same way as Daniele has done it
(probably)
The 2.4.21-pre4 doesn't make the laptop as hot as the 2.4.21 rc1 both
with patched acpi

I'm running on Gentoo 1.4rc1 (with updates) and I can confirm that
XFree 4.2.1 in various releases has had problems with the lid switch
on my 800c. Basically once it's pressed it would not turn on
again. Loosing sync when switching the display to/from text-mode and
graphics was also a problem. I'm now running with XFree 4.3.0 with up
to date drm-modules for 4.3.0 and lid switch and sync problems are
gone.
I still have a problem what when i press the log out button in Gnome
2.2 and the scren is faded, then the machine will isntantly do a hard
reset.
My kernel is 2.4.21-pre7 with ACPI 20030328 and preempt applied to
it. Also running with a custom DSDT that makes most stuff work,
including turning the brightness up and down :)

It's packaged as an "ebuild" in gentoo, taken from

Removing *'es and changing a few variable names made most of the stuff
happy. Then a bit of hand patching of osl.c to make it load the
overriding DSDT.

Hm, I'm running exactly the same model (with Red Hat 8) and don't see
this behaviour. The cardbus controller is detected and assigned to
interrupt 11, where it'll happily do its work.
Are you sure, that this is really related to ACPI? Is the controller
detected if you boot your system without ACPI? Does it show in lspci
then?

Stephan

Hi,

I'm using a N800c, but still some comments:
> -Fn F7 and Fn F8 not working
This is not ACPI related I think: I also had this problem once, and if
I remember correctly it was related to the version of XFree86 I was
using. Try to install the latest 4.3.0 and see if it helps.
> -lidswitch not working, but if working display doesn't come back
Yes, I'm having that problem, too. I can work around it by switching
blindly to a text console and pressing the lid button, again. The text
console will appear then and switching back to X works now. But this
doesn't seem to work if I have the radeon framebuffer enabled. This
still sucks...
I tried to locate and disable the code in the DSDT, which toggles the
backlight off when the lid button is activated, but didn't
succeed. This seems to happen beyong the ACPI realm.
> -irda not working
Can't confirm that. From my modules.conf:
alias irda0 nsc-ircc
options nsc-ircc io=0x03e8 irq=3
I used that to communicate to a mobile phone (Nokia 6210) and it
worked fine.
> -acpi performance not working (known problem)
Same for me. If you manually need to toggle the CPU frequency, try the
cpufreq patch.

I'm pretty sure that it's related to ACPI. Booting with a stock Red Hat
kernel, PCMCIA works fine.
I then do the following:
1. Start with a stock 2.4.20 kernel
2. Apply acpi-20021205-2.4.20.diff.gz
3. Take /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-9/configs/kernel-2.4.20-i686.config as my
.config
4. Run make xconfig, and disable APM and add ACPI support
5. Build and install the kernel.
When I boot with this kernel, PCMCIA support fails to load. The only
major difference I can see is that with the Red Hat kernel, interrupt 11
is shared between the cardbus controller and the ATI graphics card.
With the kernel built with ACPI, interrupt 11 is unassigned. Whatever
differences I was seeing before with lspci were either an illusion or
solved by something I did but I don't know what, exactly it could have been.
I've included a bunch of files that might give someone a clue:
/proc/interrupts with and without ACPI in the kernel
/proc/devices with and without ACPI in the kernel
/proc/pci with and without ACPI in the kernel
The output of lspci with and without ACPI in the kernel
I thought that maybe it could be a firmware problem, since it has
version F.1A and Daniele mentioned using F.18A, but I upgraded and it
didn't help.

Either the mailing list is stripping attachments or you forgot to
include these files. I think it would also be helpful to see your
kernel config (.config).

RedHat 9 has XFree 4.3.0 it seems that the 2.4.20 kernel has a working
Fn 7, fn 8 and lid switcht, bit 2.4.21-pre4 not

Hmmm, I think the radeon frame buffer and XFree byte each other. I think
I am going to try that later this week.

the cpufreq patch seems te work, but I don't notice any difference in
power consumption reported the battery status

I don't know if that helps, since I own a different notebook (Asus L3C),
but pressing the lid button has always worked for me, regardless of
configuration (Radeon M7, kernels 2.4.20 and 2.4.21-pre[56] with radeonfb,
XFree-4.2.1 and 4.3.0).
Best regards,

Do you have direct rendering (DRI) in XFree86 enabled? Maybe try to
disable that and reboot your machine. It might help. Otherwise I don't
know what might be causing this problem.

No, they don't, normally they can happily work side by side.

You mean by looking at the "present rate" for the battery? Well, then
its obvious why you can't notice any difference: When your power is
online the discharging rate is 0 usually, so it does not report
current power consumption properly. If, however, you're offline, the
BIOS will automatically switch the CPU to power saving mode (1.2 GHz
in my case). Both cpufreq and /proc/cpuinfo don't see that
transition. If you use cpufreq then, the CPU is already in power
saving mode and the power consumption is no longer affected.
Seems the engineers at Compaq didn't trust the OS very much: Although
ACPI suggests that the operating system is responsible for handling
power management, the BIOS for the Evo N800 series is doing quite a
lot of work behind the scenes like toggling CPU frequency, disabling
the graphics when the lid is closed and so on. I'm not sure I like
that approach...
Regards,
Stephan

I just wanted to thank everyone who had suggestions on this problem. It
turns out that my problem was that I was compiling PCMCIA support as a
module. Any kernel I built this way failed to load pcmcia support.
Building it into the kernel and not as a module fixed my problem.
Thanks again for all the help.
Mike
