I don't know if that helps, since I own a different notebook (Asus L3C), but pressing the lid button has always worked for me, regardless of configuration (Radeon M7, kernels 2.4.20 and 2.4.21-pre[56] with radeonfb, XFree-4.2.1 and 4.3.0).
