Andy,
Safe to say it was a mistake for me to have "CONFIG_ACPI_HT be a
pre-requisite for CONFIG_ACPI". Too many people were confused when they
ran config; and those without HT were downright preplexed...
Going going back to the CONFIG_ACPI controls all ACPI scheme....
In the 2.4.22 case, CONFIG_ACPI_HT_ONLY pulls in acpitables.o, which are
completely self-contained. As CONFIG_ACPI is defined for the HT_ONLY
case, CONFIG_ACPI_BOOT is used to enable building drivers/acpi/
In the 2.4.23/2.6 movie, the options are the same, but acpitables.o is
gone. CONFIG_ACPI_BOOT is always set, no matter if HT_ONLY or not.
The rough edge here is that stuff like sony and ipmi use CONFIG_ACPI at
build time, not realizing that HT_ONLY is set until run-time when the
discover acpi_disabled. They'd still have to check acpi_disabled if
they used something like CONFIG_ACPI_INTERPRETER to indicate run-time
support because it may not load; but at least if it _wasn't_ defined,
they'd know at build time not to assume ACPI.
Cheers,
-Len

Concurred, teasing people using config seems to be a favorite sport lately ;)

However, let me add that I am "double perplexed", because I have a
CPU with a ht flag, bought as a ht CPU, in a "ht ready mainboard"
which is unable to show its sibling. SMP was configured, found the
ht flag, but it returned only one core.
processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 15
model : 2
model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
stepping : 7
cpu MHz : 2399.779
cache size : 512 KB
fdiv_bug : no
hlt_bug : no
f00f_bug : no
coma_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 2
wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm
bogomips : 4784.12
I even overrode the init code telling it that it found 2,
but the second one would not come up.
Does this stepping do ht and if so what can be wrong?
No, I never tried XP.
Regards
Michael
