First, excuseme if I write to the wrong list, I don't speak english very
well too.
I'm using a 2.4.22 kernel patched with ACPI-20030916 in Red Hat Linux
9.0 in a Dell Inspiron 4150 and works very well despite some little an
unfrequently problems with X when switching to console via Ctrl+Alt+Fx
(but this is not the cause of writing this)
Before ACPI, I use APM and with APM I can use the S2D (Suspend 2 Disk)
feature of my dell without any additonal software or kernel/patch, using
only the 'apm -s' command and the BIOS of my Dell.
¿Is there any way to do the same thing with ACPI without using any 2.4
non-patched kernel? ¿How?
I know what says the docs, that I need to patch the kernel and use
additional software, but if in the past my Laptop made it without any
special software, I belive that it can make it now also without any
patch.
Thanks for any comment or explanation.
Salut

Suspending on 2.4 is only possible using the bios with apm or suspend to disk using swsusp (software suspend). On 2.6 kernels it is possible to use bios aided suspend, but it is not stable yet so it might work on your laptop and it might not. > > Thanks for any comment or explanation. > > Salut > > > > > ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program. ------------------------------------------------------- This SF. No, without any special hardware. Only the standard BIOS of the Dell Inspiron Laptop. Actually I can start my system using 2 kernels: the standard 2.4.20 non-patched (Red Hat) and the 2.4.22 vanilla kernel patched with the ACPI patch. In the first kernel (2.4.20-8 with apm) if i do a 'apm -s' it suspends to disk (on a suspend partition on /dev/hda1) and resumes OK. In the second kernel (2.4.22 acpi-patched) I can't (and I don't know how) suspend to disk. Thanks. If so, you probably can (echo 4b > /proc/acpi/sleep). Note that I haven't used that in any way so I might be wrong. However, if there's only S4 reported, you'll have to download the swsusp patch (http://swsusp.sourceforge.net/) for 2.4 kernels -- the 2.0 version is almost stable now. Some notes only for documentation to reporting if someone is interested: - The suspend and resume process is very slow (in apm was very fast) - I need to boot from the suspend partition (in the past with apm, the Laptop automagically boots from it without user-action). - ... the typical 'usb-controller halted' messages floods the screen on resume, I need to prepare some scripts to avoid it.. ;) Again thank very much for your answer. That is automatic, and in fact I don't know why you have to do that at all. In theory, the suspend process will go to restore memory, then restore some hardware related stuff, then pass control to the just reloaded OS. I can't say for the slow/fast issue since the laptop I'm using do not have apm. -- Ducrot Bruno -- Which is worse: ignorance or apathy? -- Don't know.
