I've made a patch for the 2.4.23 kernel for cpufreq. It's a patch to the
vanilla 2.4.23 kernel from kernel.org. I'm using it right now on my lappy.

Is cpufreq something equivalent to Intel´s eist (speedstep)?

Yes.. It's a Open Source implementation of that.. I've not/never tried the
intel version speedstep..

Anyway, I made some tests:
- - I've always the problem above if I use the command
	bunzip2/gunzip -c [patch].bz2/gz | patch -p1

- - if I bunzip2/gunzip + untar (so 'tar xvf[j|z]') and then I use the
manual patching script present in the 'cpufreq' package, all goes well

As this is the only patch which doesn't work on my system, I think
there's a problem in the patch, but maybe as I'm on Debian unstable,
there could be some bugs on my machine.

It's because it's not a patch. It's a bzipped *tar* archive (note .tar.bz2)
as opposed to a bzipped patch (.bz2). Untar it and proceed according to
instructions.

If you'll notice the file is a tar.bz2 and not just bz2.
What you need to do is
tar -xjf cpufreq-LINUX_2_4-20031215.tar.bz2
cd cpufreq
./patchin.sh <kernel-dir>
This will patch you're kernel and add links to the cpufreq files.

Thats because if you just bunzip2/gunzip -c [patch].bz2/gz | patch -p1
you get the raw tar file piped into patch and of course patch can't
handle that.
When you untar there is a patch file in the top directory which is the
patch that should be applied and some files that are linked to.

Don't think that its debian unstable since I am using debian unstable
and my system is rock solid (There are the occasional problematic
programs but very rare. Most of the problem is the occasional
dependencies that get update with a delay and require manually resolving
the broken packages on update).
Using the debian kernel with external patches can cause problems though
as there are all sorts of patches added by debian that may collide.
I am using vanilla kernel from www.kernel.org for years now without any
problems.

I don't think it's up to acpi folks to integrate cpufreq.  The 2 works
are definitely different due to the fact that cpufreq claims at
first to be architecture independant (you have to consider arm, sparc,
ppc...).

Of course, an ACPI based cpufreq driver for 2.4 will be fine, and perhaps
an acpi governor based both on input from thermal stuff, load of the system
may be good, who knows.

Note that acpi use cpufreq api in 2.[56].

Can anyone tell me what's the difference between the 20031215 and the
20031201 release?? (I used the 20031201 patch to patch my 2.4.23 kernel)
There was some errors which was resolved by hand.
