The same happens with my Asus M3700N (centrino). After 
echo 3 > /proc/acpi/sleep, some messages on the screen indicate that
the system is about to go to sleep, and very quickly the screen goes
dark and the blue on-light starts to blink. Then, if I press the on

followed by a return back to life. If I keep the on-button pressed on
for a long time, the system goes off. But then, when trying to turn it
on again, it attempts to boot for 1 second, and then turns off

I just can say "me too!". My Sony Vaio PCG-F403 (i44BX, P3-450, NeoMagic
Graphics) enters S3, but when I press a key, it shuts down completely
and can no longer be turned on. Only removing PSU and Battery for a few
seconds solves it.

Haven't checked with the last kernel, but last time I checked my vaio
pcg-fxa53 also would wake up but would only show a blank screen and no
other response. Pressing the power button for several seconds shut it
down and then it would boot up normally (not to the suspended session
though ;-)

Looks like there are a few of us who have the same problem.. what 
error messages do you get in syslog? If we're all getting similar 
error messages then that may narrow down the problem for the 
developers..

What's likely is that you're hitting several problems at once:
1) display reinit: if acpi_sleep=s3_{bios,mode} at boot doesn't help, I
   don't know what does,
2) keyboard / mouse (touchpad) dead: apply the patches found here [1]
   against a vanilla 2.6.0, should fix it once and for all,
3) uhci-hcd's appalling PM / suspend / resume support -- a workaround is to
   unload all USB drivers prior to suspend.

Judging by the fact that you have something written in syslog after resume,
it seems you're not so far from having S3 working, the video adapter being
the most important issue.

I minimized the number of errors by unloading ALL modules before 
trying to suspend. Finally, it came down to what seemed like just 
one error message while resuming:

kernel: MCE: The hardware reports a non fatal, correctable incident

below and now the MCE error does not show up while resuming.. but I 
still don't have display after resume.

Hopefull I'll get to the point where the only things that don't work 
on resume are the keyboard/mouse.

Yes, I unloaded all USB drivers before suspending.

This definitely seems to be the issue.. wonder if this will help but

i personally do not come to this point. i get an error about could not
resume or something like that.
i made several kernels until now, i tried every possible combinations
and tried to get the most minimalistic kernel possible (i hope). i
completely disabled usb and fiwi support. i also tried apm instead of
acpi but it ended with the same results.
i played around with the preemtible kernel and other new improvements of
kernel 2.6 (whether they have something to do with power managment or
not). but i always get the same results.
there is something i really would like to know. why does these things
work that flawlessly in windows but not in linux? does this have
something to do with vendor specific drivers that are only provided in
windows? does windows use other standards than linux?
the problem is that power managment is (at least for me) the most
important things on laptops. linux provides that many advantages that
i'm not willing to switch to windows only because of pm but this is
really a crappy situation.
is there any hope that these things will work in the future or are there
any other possibilities to debug pm or to support the developers in any
way?

oOPS... Snafu here.. My script is actually to state S1 not S3..

echo 3 > /proc/acpi/sleep actually does _nothing_

echo 1 > /proc/acpi/sleep is Ok..

I think we need to find out common things , and fix them one by one!

I think you are right.. I will check it out.. 

Each time I reboot/shutdown, I notice that it syncs with the hardware clock.

I will look into the startup/shutdown scripts.

I will try your suggestion..

On my D600.. I can get S3 to work.. and it can also come back to life.. If
not mistaken,
the mouse would be all screwed up but, going to a Virtual console and back
to the GUI fixes it.

Only problem is my Date&Time is screwed up. It keeps the Time&Date at the
time of sleep!!! I'm not sure if that's due to ACPI or something else..

Hi there,

 

i've read now ~5 hours the posts of vaio problems in this mailing list. All

I also have the problem that when i echo 3 > /proc/acpi/sleep it suspends
