I can confirm the very same problems on my ASUS 3800LC laptop, same 
configuration.

By the way, can you turn off the computer using "shutdown now -h"? On my 
laptop, init 0 hangs on without turning off the computer. I have to press the 
power button during 4 seconds or so.
