Hello list,

When I load the acpi/processor module (or compile it into the kernel),
a high-pitched sound will start to emit from under the keyboard. This
whine will lessen when the CPU has something to do, so I presume it has
something to do the the dummy calls? Would there be an easy fix?

Also, removing the processor module from the kernel results in a kernel OOPS:

Jul 4 15:25:19 epsilon kernel: In idle task - not syncing
Disabling PREEMPT in the kernel will fix this.

Both these issues occur with recent (vanilla) kernels: 2.6.6 and 2.6.7.
Otherwise, loading acpi/processor in the kernel will (apart from the
whine) leaves me with a working system: throttling, speedstep, etc. will
all work as expected.

If you need more info, I'll be happy to produce it. Hints on where to
look/change parameters are also more than welcome!

If I'm barking up the wrong tree here, my apologies in advance. But I
hope at least the pitched sound thing can be fixed, because without the
acpi/processor the CPU runs hotter than it should.

Thanks for the great work on the ACPI subsytem!

Regards,

Renald Buter

There is a patch in http://bugme.osdl.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1716, it
should fix your problem. Please try.

Thanks,

Thanks I will try tonight!

But that should *only* fix the OOPS, doesn't it? The whining sound
should still be there...

Regards,

Renald

Try changing the HZ in linux/include/asm-i386/param.h from 1000 to 100.
This fixed the problem for me and I didn't experience any side effects.
NB: You should recompile all your external modules too , since some of
em might not like the change without recompiling.

/Michael

Sound while powersaving seems to be normal on many machines. See archives.

I am sure that 100 is the value that comes on kernel 2.4.x, on xine faqs
(http://xinehq.de/index.php/faq#SMOOTHNESS) suggest Set HZ to 1000 in
/usr/src/linux/include/asm-i386/param.h

Ah. I must have tried the wrong keywords while searching.

But thank you (and thanks to the other replies): I can stop worrying
about whether I am damaging the CPU in some way.

BTW, I changed (as suggested) the HZ in params.h and now the sound
almost disappeared. Haven't tested video-playback quality, so I don't
know if this will be affected in any way...

Thanks again!

Renald
