Hey
Ive got a my new acer 8000 laptop and Im having some problems with
getting battery status info.
Here are outputs from /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state with AC-adapter
plugged in and without:
=============================================================
% cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: charging
present rate: 0 mA
remaining capacity: 3706 mAh
present voltage: 0 mV
% cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: discharging
present rate: 0 mA
remaining capacity: 3720 mAh
present voltage: 0 mV
============================================================
To compare, here is the same output from my friends ibm r51:
============================================================
% cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: charging
present rate: 30159 mW
remaining capacity: 3840 mWh
present voltage: 11640 mV
% cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: discharging
present rate: 20414 mW
remaining capacity: 4350 mWh
present voltage: 11101 mV
=============================================================
As you note my present rate and present voltage doesnt seem to be
detected. This make trouble for userspace apps to read and calculate
correct status. What info do you need from me?
Regards

Acer problem, and known one too. Maybe if you fix their DSDT for
them.... Go bug Acer.

Search maillist archives, look up "smart battery specification" in google.
If you are willing to spend few days writing driver, let me know.

i'm new to this list and i did not get the beginning of this thread nor
was i able to find it on the archives.
as you probably saw, i posted a message about an acer travelmate 4001
wlmi which has a smart battery.
is your problem simmilar? i mean, are you one of those unlucky fellows
that can't read battery informations because your is also a smart battery?

i'm willing to participate also. but first, let me see if i
understood... the first step should be building a driver to communicate
with the smbus via i2c. am i right?
after that, we should build an acpi driver that reads battery
information from the smbus and process it adequately...
thanks for the information.

I believe that smbus is subset of i2c... So first step would be
"make it talk with smart battery over i2c".
Anyway I may be wrong. You'll know for sure when the patch starts
working :-).

sometime in the not-so-near future :-)
i'll start studying i2c to find out the smbus "address" (sorry if this
is a dumb mistake) and try to scan it for the smart battery.
can it be done in userspace? or do i need to start coding in the kernel
right away?
p.s.: do you mind if i reply to you and CC to the list or the reply in
the list es enough?

Ive read through the (short) smbus specs and the 2.2.14 patch and I dont
think its very hard to incoperate into the kernel (but Ive never done
any kernel coding before ;) except for the asm because Im almost totally
blank on asm.
The biggest problem I have is that I aint 100% sure that I have smart
battery because shouldnt my /proc/acpi/battery/* be totally empty then?

Some code already exists - the lm_sensors package
(http://secure.netroedge.com/~lm78/) includes the "smartbatt" module.
However, it is for 2.4.x kernels, therefore some porting work will be
needed to use it on 2.6.x.
SMBus controller drivers already exist for most chipsets - see
drivers/i2c/busses/.

No idea, perhaps i2c has some "debug-call-me-from-userspace" hooks.

2.2.14 driver is calling BIOS, right? You do not want to do that.
