Battery status wrong from 2.6.7 when running on batteries

All,

Back on the list after a long-ish absence.

I have been upgrading my kernel regularly and since 2.6.7 (included), the
battery status is wrong, but apparently only when I run on the battery, not
when on AC.  It starts off alright and after a while it is just not updated
anymore.  It seems that the temperature does the same.

Works fine under 2.6.6.

Any idea?

I confirm that the temperature does the same.  I just experienced a reading
of 99C on both zones, while the fan was apparently working as usual.

One more precision.  It's an Acer TM 636.

typically it should be something like this:
temperature:             45 C
temperature:             55 C

processor).
Is your BIOS the latest. I just ask, because of the temperature problem, 
which I cannot see. There is only once every few months a wrong 
temerature, that triggers an Linux-emergency shutdown.

With your reboot-problem: Do you have configured high-precision Timers? 
Use the generic-RTC driver. Do not use APIC/LAPIC.

Please tell use, how your millage would be.

Here is what I have at the moment:

     Thermal 1: ok, 46.0 degrees C
     Thermal 2: ok, 45.0 degrees C

However, if I now run on battery, after a while it stops working (is not
updated anymore, and last time was at 99C).  The battery charge does the
same.

I just tried it again.  After about 1.5 min, both temperatures are at 45.0C
and the battery level jumped from 97% charged to 45% charged (is the 45 a
clue????).

Interestingly enough, when it does it (I mean, not working after having
been on batteries), when I /sbin/halt, it does not power down (just prints
"Power down" and stays there).  When I stay on AC, /sbin/halt powers down
the computer which restarts immediately after (see my other post on that).

BIOS version is: V4R6.1 R01-C0O.  Is that the latest?

I use to have that quite often, but only had it once in a very long while.

I know about that (already fixed it in 2.6.6).  Just to verify, I tried
different combinations, which didn't change anything.  What about the HPET
thing that appears in many different places in the config?

Yes it is.

I did not look up thing for my last posting... sorry. So to shorten thing, 
I attached you my config.gz. So you might want to give it a try. I would 
be nice, if this brings you forward, to dig down the differences in your 
current config and mine and elaborate later on the list.

Since my last email, my machine froze, which hadn't happened for a very
long time.  I rebooted it, recompiled my kernel with your config file
(slightly modified because apparently my network card is not the same as
yours and because I need devfs (for gentoo).  I had to manually insert the
acpi modules (I have them in the kernel).  I unplugged the laptop from the
mains and about 2 minutes after, it froze...

Rebooted and redid the experiment: booting while plugged in, then unplug
from the mains.  After a few minutes, both temperatures show 46 and ... THE
BATTERY SHOWS 46% CHARGED...

/sbin/halt displays "Power down" but doesn't power down...

That's with the same config as yours (Hartwig) apart from devfs on,
/dev/pts off and 8139too as a module (network card).

first I would ask you that we should take this discussion off the list. 
Maybe we should open a bugzilla-case for that issue: http://bugme.osdl.org

To get on with our search, you might want to send the .config you used 
(i.e. mine, which you changed by two items???), and I would try to 
reproduce you problems. You talked about a different NIC. I thought, that 
it is all the time a RTL-8139 chip CONFIG_8139 which is built into TM 63x 
notebooks, but maybe it is just the modus (module vs. buil-in)?
On the other hand, you might need to build every major-release of Linux, 
to find out, where exactly the regression for you begun. Then if you have 
the adjaccent pair, you might go on and build every pre-, rc- releases in 
between the two, to find the exact minor-release step. Just hope, that the 
patch was small, because you then need to guess an try to only apply parts 
of the offending patch, till you found, which part of the patch caused 
your troubles. This is really time-consuming. Be sure, to sync your 
harddisks and have a backup of it, just in case you find something more 
severe...

I am verry sorry that I have to tell you, that I spoke of Linux 2.6.9, 
when I was running 2.6.8. So with 2.6.9 and 2.6.10-rc1 the poweroff-problem
also happens with my TM634. On the other hand, I never had the temprature 
and AC-status thing.
There is a bad workaround for our laptops: If you close the lid, it will 
not restart. That is a protective rule in the BIOS that should prevent the 
laptop to start while in it's covered in its bag (I suppose).

That, or there's some sort of PM (APM stand-by?) going on when the lid is
closed _and_ ACPI is off. Try booting with acpi=off and close the lid --
see particularly if the NIC responds or if the timer interrupts go off.
