Do whatever you prefer, and ask people about your reply preferency.
Usually it is a policy and a good thing(?) to send private replies _and_
a Cc to the mailing list. For example if you send a private mail, then
other users/developers won't see that your problem is taken care of, or
simple mail list send would result a lost wood in the forest effect, so
your mail might be 'lost' in other mailing list mails.
Sometimes this annoys me, but I like it more often the way it happens.
