Hello all,
With kernel 2.6.10, I have the following problem with uhci_hcd:
After an ACPI S3 suspend it fails to see any USB device plugged in.
If I unload the module and load it again, it works again.
I hadn't this problem with previous kernels, where it worked just fine.
Do you know something that changed between 2.6.9 and 2.6.10 that could
lead to this behavior ?
It is ACPI or USB fault ?
Thanks,
Paul

Nothing relevant has changed in the uhci_hcd driver, so far as I know.
I'd be inclined to guess that ACPI is the culprit. Have you tried booting
with "acpi=off", in both 2.6.9 and 2.6.10?

Hello Alan,
If I boot with "acpi=off" then I cannot use ACPI S3 to
suspend and resume, and my problem appears after an
ACPI S3 suspend/resume cycle.
Thanks,
Paul

You could try something a little weaker, like "acpi=noirq".

This just occurred to me: After a suspend/resume, when the uhci_hcd driver
doesn't recognize new devices being plugged in, can you tell if the
interrupt count for the driver is changing? If the host controller
doesn't share an IRQ, the numbers in /proc/interrupts will tell the story.
As another test, what shows up in the debugging file for the controller?
Under 2.6.9 that file would be in the /proc/driver/uhci/ directory, but it
was recently moved to the debugfs filesystem, and I'm not sure whether
that move was done before or after 2.6.10 was released.

Does it work after swsusp? Can you try unloading module before suspend
and reloading it after resume?

Hi Pavel,
I don't have swsusp compiled in, but if I unload and
reload the module, then it works.
Anyway, this is not the intended behaviour, as it
worked fine till 2.6.10 without unload/reload.
Thanks,
Paul

Hi Alan,
My UHCI is sharing interrupt 9 with acpi.
IRQ 9 usage does increment after the resume.
And also, even after the resume, when the USB is not
seeing any device plugged in, if I unload and reload
the uhci-hcd, then it works.
Maybe, when I reload uhci-hcd, it does some
reinitialization of the usb controller.

Yes it is a bug. Find which changeset causes it and complain to its author.
It is probably going to be some usb change.

You might also try "pci=routeirq". This works around some known
issues with suspend/resume in 2.6.10.

Hi Bjorn,
I tried with "pci=routeirq" but the same behaviour.
Then I isolate uhci_hcd to be alone on IRQ 9, and I
can see that after a susp/resume cycle, the irq 9
count is still incrementing, but lsusb shows no new
device.
If I rmmod/insmod the uhci-hcd at this point, it
works.
So I think is not an IRQ problem.
Thanks,
Paul

Is ehci-hcd loaded? I have to reload ehci-hcd to make USB working.

Have you been able to see what information is in the debugging file,

Hi Alan,
Yes, I completely forgot, but here it is:
before suspend, without any devices plugged:
HC status
usbcmd = 0008 Maxp32 EGSM
usbstat = 0020 HCHalted
usbint = 000f
usbfrnum = (1)278
flbaseadd = 173d8278
sof = 40
stat1 = 0080
stat2 = 0080
Frame List
Skeleton QH's
After resume, without any devices plugged:
HC status
usbcmd = 0008 Maxp32 EGSM
usbstat = 0020 HCHalted
usbint = 000f
usbfrnum = (0)344
flbaseadd = 173d8344
sof = 40
stat1 = 0080
stat2 = 0080
Frame List
Skeleton QH's
After resume, with a device plugged:
HC status
usbcmd = 00c1 Maxp64 CF RS
usbstat = 0000
usbint = 000f
usbfrnum = (0)eb8
flbaseadd = 173d8eb8
sof = 40
stat1 = 0080
stat2 = 0093 ConnectChange Connected
Frame List
Skeleton QH's
After resume, with that device pulled:
HC status
usbcmd = 00c1 Maxp64 CF RS
usbstat = 0000
usbint = 000f
usbfrnum = (0)1d0
flbaseadd = 173d81d0
sof = 40
stat1 = 0080
stat2 = 0082 ConnectChange
Frame List
Skeleton QH's
After resume, with that device plugged again in the
second USB socket:
HC status
usbcmd = 00c1 Maxp64 CF RS
usbstat = 0000
usbint = 000f
usbfrnum = (1)b20
flbaseadd = 173d8b20
sof = 40
stat1 = 0093 ConnectChange Connected
stat2 = 0082 ConnectChange
Frame List
Skeleton QH's
All this time, lsusb gives:
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
After rmmod uhci-hcd/insmod uhci-hcd:
HC status
usbcmd = 00c1 Maxp64 CF RS
usbstat = 0000
usbint = 000f
usbfrnum = (1)e38
flbaseadd = 16ea4e38
sof = 40
stat1 = 0095 Enabled Connected
stat2 = 0080
Frame List
Skeleton QH's

Length=7ff MaxLen=0 DT0 EndPt=1 Dev=2, PID=69(IN)
(buf=16e8c020)
and now a lsusb gives:

I did those tests without ehci-hcd loaded, and the
irqs are like this:

Hi Stefan,
I tried with and without ehci-hcd loaded.
In fact, right now on kernel 2.6.10, only ehci-hcd is
surviving a suspend resume cycle without rmmod/insmod.

Very interesting indeed. This indicates that the problem isn't with the
uhci-hcd driver but higher up in the USB stack. It's also not an IRQ
problem, as you have already realized. In brief, uhci-hcd resumed
correctly and received the appropriate interrupt when you plugged in the
device. But then the hub driver never got a corresponding status change
event. (Or else the khubd thread had died, which is quite possible.)
Can you build the USB drivers with CONFIG_USB_DEBUG=y, and post the
dmesg log showing what happens following the suspend/resume + plug in a
device? Also, can you say whether or not CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND is set?
Finally, after plugging in the device, can you get the Alt-SysRq-T stack
trace for the khubd process? (This may work out better if you switch to
single-user mode and kill unnecessary daemons before doing the swsusp.)

Hi Alan,
CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND is not set.
Should I try to set it ?
I thought it is for something else from its attached
help, that's why I left it unset.
Thanks,
Paul

No, leaving it unset is fine (and probably best, for the moment). I just
wanted to know whether or not you had set it.

Hi Alan,
I just compiled a new kernel with both
CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND and CONFIG_USB_DEBUG, and now it
works if nothing is plugged in USB when I suspend the
machine.
If I have something plugged in at suspend time, after
resume it is not there anymore, and I have to
pull/plug the device again.
I will try to compile only with CONFIG_USB_DEBUG, to
see what happens.

Just out of curiosity, does the same thing happen with CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND
if you rmmod ehci-hcd before suspending? Does a device plugged in to the
UHCI controller continue to work after you resume?

I think you've run across another indication that the suspend/resume
support in the USB drivers is not yet ready for prime time. Does the
patch below help? (Note: this is meant for use with CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND
not set.)

Rmmoding ehci_hcd before suspend results in a system working
flawlessly for me.

This would be a case where the root hub timer isn't
getting shut down "properly" during suspend ... right
now the OHCI and EHCI code test for HCD_IS_RUNNING()
in their hub_status_data() entries. I remember not
liking that fix, but also not thinking usbcore was
a safe place for the fix -- I forget why.

Just for the record: I've seen that work with
EHCI and OHCI, for S1 suspend (which works much
like S3 from the USB perspective) and swsusp in
poweredown "S4-ish" suspend. At least, I've seen
that work for code that went into 2.6.10-early
patches; haven't made time to re-test lately.

Hi Alan,
Yes, I think it works as you expected.
I have CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND and CONFIG_USB_DEBUG, and
the behaviour is:
If ehci-hcd is not loaded but only uhci-hcd, suspend
and resume works just fine with and without USB
devices plugged in.
If ehci-hcd and uhci-hcd is loaded , suspend and
resume works as expected if there is no USB device
plugged at suspend/resume time, or if there are both
uhci (USB 1/1.1) and ehci (USB 2) devices.
If there are only uhci devices (USB 1/1.1) when
suspending, they are not seen upon resume, unless I
unplug/replug them again.
Hmmm, interesting.
Thanks,
Paul

Hi Alan,
Now after a suspend/resume cycle, I see the devices

Now, even a rmmod/insmod after resume does not help
any more.
Tested with both ehci and uhci loaded when suspending.

Hi Oliver,
Yes, it works if rmmod ehci_hcd before suspending, but
it was a time when there was no need to rmmod anything
before suspending ( for me was something like 2.6.7 or
around ).
In 2.6.9 you cannot suspend anymore with ehci-hcd
loaded, in 2.6.10 you can but you screw your uhci and
sometime hang your usb stack.

Hi Alan,
After some more testing, I noticed that if I suspend
with only UHCI loaded, it works fine.
If I suspend with only EHCI loaded, it works fine.
If I suspend with both UHCI and EHCI loaded, I run in
the problems we talked about.
When I say "works fine" that means that
suspends/resumes
with and without USB devices plugged in.
Thanks,
Paul.

This state of affairs is undesirable. It seems important to me to
establish that we both see the same effect.

Hi Oliver,
Yes, it works better without ehci_hcd.
I still have some minor issues, it is not flawless,
but
definitely better than before.
Please note, that for me it works the other way too:
If I rmmod uhci_hcd before suspend and I insert it
after resume, I have a happy system.
So it seems that they don't like each other (ie uhci
and ehci) when suspended.
