what about the sony_acpi driver?

Hi,

there has been this discussion some time ago when Stelian Pop submitted
his sony_acpi driver for inclusion. Back then it was IIRC dismissed with
the mention of a "soon to come" universal all-curing hotkey and an even
better video/LCD driver.
When will these come? Or did i just not look hard enough?
My problem is: i am now plagued with a SONY (yeah, i was naughty, so i
got the machine nobody wanted ;-) VGN-FS115B which has a _really_ bright
backlight. It is in fact so bright that i fear for my retinas, so i have
to turn it down (this also brings the battery life from less than 2 hours
to about 3 1/2 hours :-). To do this, i need the sony_acpi driver, or boot
Windows.

So the question is: will the sony_acpi driver be included (when?) or will
the omnipotent generic driver work soon?

The generic hotkey driver has been in mm tree for a while. But you need to configure it for your laptop.

Please send me output of acpidmp, and let me see how to configure generic hotkeydriver for your model?

It is hard to manage if each brand or model has a specific hotkey driver in kernel.

Ok, so i did not look hard enough or i was blinded by the super-bright
backlight ;-)

There are no ACPI hotkeys on this machine. It is SONY cr*p :-( Do you still
want the acpidmp output?

yes, but those specific drivers work. Today. And they do even more than
hotkeys (which are non-existent on this machine), e.g. adjusting LCD backlight
or switching the ASUS custom LEDs.

I admit the so-called generic-acpi-hotkey-driver is hard to use. :-(
And I'm trying to make it easy to use.

Please try tool: acpidm. And send it to me unless you got zero.

Believe me, generic-hotkey-driver and acpi-video-driver can handle these, if this is a acpi system.

A fairly large number of machines seem to have brightness control
methods that aren't exposed via the acpi video device standard. Can
these still be dealt with?

If they are ACPI system, I suppose they will rely on ASL method to handle video stuff. Then, I think generic-hotkey-driver can accommodate the quirks.
Please give me some example to prove I'm wrong. (The example should come from ACPI system.)

On toshiba 3000 (and actually a lot of Compal laptops) LCD brightness is
handled via a register in the EC space (sometimes the node is called BLVL,
is at 0xb9, first 4 bits).

No ACPI methods (under, say, a video device) handle it, therefore it
is necessary to read/write to it directly in order to control brightness
as its done with the omke kernel module.

Thanks for this info. If there don't have AML-methods and GPEs related to hotkey features on a specific box, then
I think generic-hotkey-driver cannot help.

Ok. I tried the video driver and got lots of (mostly irritating) information,
could not do anything with it. After compiling and insmod'ing sony_acpi, i
could immediately adjust my brightness ;-)

I am willing to try out all kinds of stuff.

Have you tried spicctrl and the sonypi driver?  I was able to get LCD
brightness controls on an older Vaio with those.

I went through the DSDT and SSDTs, found that there is a specific ACPI device
: SNC whose _HID is SNY5001. In the scope of this device, there are several
Methods defined but no callers. So, I think sony_acpi.c won't give your ability to control things through real hot-keys. right? If you need to use hotkey on
keyboard to control, you have to try sonypi driver. Because I didn't find any
GPEs related to hot-key methods, which are must-have for acpi-generic-hotkey-driver. I prefer integrate the quirks of sony_acpi.c into generic hotkey driver.

exactly, this is what i meant with "No hotkeys, this is sony cr*p", sorry for
not being more clear, but i can "echo 4 > /proc/acpi/sony/brightness" which is 
better than nothing. :-)

Sonypi does not work on newer machines (something gets detected, but i get
no events or actions from it)

Yes, there is no hotkey functionality with sony_acpi or with sonypi either.

I am fine with that, i just had the impression that the generic hotkey and
video drivers are a bit like "vapourware" while the specific ones exist.
I agree that having working generic drivers is best, but people need 
something to work with until they are ready ;-)
