Hi

This is a repost from the Debian - laptop list, I hope you guys can help me
with some advices, so here it goes:

Hi

I finally got my Suspend to RAM working with my Picturebook. If interested
how, please go to

www.celifornia.com/documents/sonyvaio.html

But I have got one problem. If I try the suspend with the 2.6.11 kernel that I
have, it wil do it beautifuly, but it will not resume from suspend no matter
what I do. I find it googling, that I need to pass a special boot parameter
with Grub, that looks like this

acpi_sleep=s3_bios

After all my Grub entry looks like this:

title           Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.11
root            (hd0,1)
kernel          /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.11 root=/dev/hda2 ro acpi_sleep=s3_bios
initrd          /boot/initrd.img-2.6.11
savedefault
boot

Now, I can suspend and resume with the script I wrote for it, but even while
suspended, the screen wont turn 100% off. If I tilt in in a way, about
160degree angle, I can see some text on the screen. Of course I can barely
see it, but I can for Christ`s sake, while it should be off. For an
"untrained" eye it seems the screen is black of course, but I got suspicious
after a few days of being able to suspend, as the laptop wasnt 100% quiet.
The screen is making a little, very very little scratching noise, that I
cannot really describe its more like an "electric" noise. Its bugging me, as
it must be using some of my battery, while it should not be using anything
other than what the RAM needs to not loose its stored memory.

Thanks for helping, and let me know if you need any other log or files from my
lappy.

Bence

If you don't have a PCI driver bound to your video device, the kernel
will not actually power it down. This is probably a deficiency in the
kernel, but still. On most machines the BIOS will power it down anyway,
but this isn't always the case.

So it means there isnt a way I can make it work? How can I tell the BIOS to
shut the screen? Do I need to enable that dusty APMD to do it for me?

And the screen is almos shut, so it is definetally dimmed to the extent where
it cannot be seen, except with suspicious eyes. And when I resume, which is
open the display and hit a key, I can see that the display turns off for a
second, and then on again. And when I suspend without that boot time
parameter, the screen is off when I do the suspend, just there is no way to
wake it up again. So my new question is, isnt there a tool, that wakes up
Video for a Ati Mobility P/M card? I also have a Dell 700m, with an Intel
onboard card, that comes with the centrinos, and there is a tool, that need
to be run upon awakening, and the video will post.

Thanks

Ben

You need a driver that will power down the PCI device.

That boot parameter has nothing to do with suspend (the only code path
it's involved with is run on resume), so I doubt that.

If the s3_bios option works, then vbetool will probably work as well.

We need some sort of solution for this. It would be easy enough to write
a PCI driver that binds to any video device and puts it into D3 on
suspend.

Thanks. I am unfortunately very far from writing anything that complex. Do you
know who might be able to write this? Or maybe somebody already wrote it
before.?

Thanks

Well, you'll need to write low-level support for sleeping your video
card/panel. Good luck.
