The interesting thing is that we've done sleepy things like down() just
prior to this. Do you have CONFIG_PREEMPT and CONFIG_DEBUG_SPINLOCK_SLEEP
enabled? If not, please turn them on, see what happens.

I don't see anything on that code path which would cause this. Maybe I
missed it.

Hmm... I didn't realize it was getting wrapped. I'll try to avoid that
next time. (If my next attempt to avoid the word-wrapping fails, then
I may not have enough free time to move to a sane mailer again for 2-3
weeks.)

PREEMPT is enabled. DEBUG_SPINLOCK_SLEEP isn't. I'll enable it now.

Sorry that took so long; I made the mistake of trying to do the kernel
compile on a kernel with lockdep-tracer, and the result was that Ingo
kept coming out with new lockdep-combo patches before the kernel
compiles could finish. I finally rebooted into vanilla 2.6.17-rc5-mm3
and did the compile there.

(Plain lockdep does slow the system down a little, but it's still fast
enough that I may actually put it into production use on most of my
Linux boxes at home. Lockdep-tracer, OTOH, is *real* slow.)

Anyway, I've now compiled a kernel with Ingo's latest lockdep-combo
and with DEBUG_SPINLOCK_SLEEP enabled. I'll attach the dmesg output
from suspending to disk with this kernel (it should just appear as
plain text at the end of this e-mail). Hopefully that will avoid the
word-wrapping problem. If the dmesg is completely unreadable for any
reason, I'll also post it here:

FWIW, I just found out that there was a new BIOS released for this
motherboard (MSI K8T Neo), and I just applied the update. The version
number jumped from 2.2 to 7.1, and judging from the appearance of the
BIOS screens, you would think that I had completely replaced the
motherboard. Anyway, so far, the new BIOS is now autodetecting the
memory timings correctly (previously it used to think my memory was
CAS3, not the CAS2 that it actually is), and I've just managed to
resume from S3 using the Ubuntu kernel without the computer
spontaneously rebooting and without experiencing video corruption or a
blank screen. (The S3 video problems used to happen under Windows XP
too, but I haven't yet tried that OS after the BIOS update.)

I probably won't be able to test an mm kernel again on this box for
several days (right now I'm dealing with both final exams for the
school quarter *and* hardware failures on other boxes). Once all that
is over with, I'll have to retest with the latest mm kernel at that
point.
