execution hangs only cntrl-c gives control back.

Try this instead:

patch -p1 < acpi-20021002-2.4.19.diff

The other response to your message will work as well as this, but, just 
for fun:

patch -p1 -i acpi-20021002-2.4.19.diff

will work, too.

Yes, there's another key to press. Maybe it would be best to use the 
other method, anyway ;-).

patch -p1 -i acpi-20021002-2.4.19.diff
or
zcat acpi...gz | patch -p1

will work better..

Please note also that ACPI only support vanilla or pre kernels.
You are on your own with a mdk kernel.
