One thing I did notice is that if I hit the lid button while running X, the screen blanks, but when I release it, the screen is not restored (it just stays blank with the backlight on). Hitting ctrl-alt-f1 to get to a text console and hitting the lid button again fixed the problem, and I could then hit ctrl-alt-f7 to get back to X. Thanks for the help.
