fan control based on temp

fan control based on temp

Hi everyone,

When I have acpi enabled on my laptop, the cpu fan doesn't come on
unless I run acpi -t and my cpu temp happens to be too hot, likewise it
doesn't turn the fan off or to low unless I run acpi -t and the temp is
low enough.  Is there some standard automated way of having this checked
and kept up with?  My laptop's overheating way too often right now cuz
of this :)

I'd guess your BIOS is buggy and neither generates thermal events nor
reports it to the OS. echo <number> >
/proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/polling_frequency might help.

Ok, maybe that didn't fix it - or at least I've run into another
problem.  Sometimes it's saying that the fan's on:

Thermal 1: active[0], 59.0 degrees C

But physically the fan's not on, and the cpu's continuing to heat up :(
I guess this is related to buggy BIOS as well though, anyone have any
suggestions?

Where du you get this info from? /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/trip_points?
This is not showing if the fan is on or off, but that the trip point
for active cooling is set to 59°C (if i understand this issue correctly).
You will find the fan status in /proc/acpi/fan/*/state
