I use gentoo linux with kernel-2.6.11.4 kernel (not gentoo-kernel!) 
patched with acpi-20050309-2.6.11.diff.gz and boot with 
resume=swap:/dev/hda3 where hda3 is my swap patition. I have searched the 
web and I see that I am not the 1st one getting the same error message; 
the question is if anybody has come up with a remedy to this problem.

That's another bug. It doesn't correspond to your problems.

That's the real reason for the failure. Do you have IDE built as modules?
Basically, the kernel checks whether it can access the device at boot
time before mounting anything. For 2.6.11.4 this is not possible with
swap devices which depend on any modules loaded. Compile in every driver
needed to access your swap device.

Very strange. What't your swap device? And please also include
the contents of /proc/cmdline

Your problem is that you have mixed up the syntax for Suspend2 and
Pavel's implementation:

Pavel's:  resume=/dev/hda3
Suspend2: resume2=swap:/dev/hda3 (or just resume2=/dev/hda3 if swap is
the only writer)

If you remove the "swap:", you should be a bit closer to being in
business.

Thanks a lot. Removing "swap:" has helped (after spending the whole last 
weekend trying to install swsusp2 with 5 different kernels ... etc.)

Now I just do not understand why suspend-to-ram does not work. It 
apparently suspends, and then turning the machine on again, it just boots 
up as if it had not been suspended, except that it has to repair the 
file system. If anybody has an idea about this, it would be appreciated.

Can't help with the next bit, but I am intrigued as to what the problem
was with suspend2. If you give me details, I might be able to help.

I don't know who told you to put "swap:" there, but it is *not* a good
idea.
