Hi,

I have a Gateway laptop, which came with a Centrino CPU. Since this is a
Centrino, I want to load the speedstep-centrino module and the thermal zone
module. Unfortunately, I found out that when I load the processor module, I
hear this high frequency sound. If I ignore it, and I go ahead and I load
the speedstep-centrino moudle, the '/sys/device/system/cpu/cpu0/cpu-freq/'
folder is populated and I can change the CPU frequency. In fact, if I change
it to 800Mhz (lowest value), the volume of the sound decreases, but it is
still annoying.

On the other hand, in Windows everything looks and sounds normal.

I do not know what kind of informations you might need, but I can provide
pretty much anything.

Thank you,
Vasilis

I forgot to say that I am running 2.6.11.6 kernel

Also, I have noticed that every time I use the CPU (for example to compile a
program), the sound goes away and comes back when the CPU stops working

Hi,

I have this exact problem too with my Acer Extensa 4101 WLMi notebook.
It's related to low-quality power switching components on the mainboard,
I think. The cpu module activates support for the CPU power saving
states (C1, C2, ..) and by switching between two of them very quickly
(1000 Hz?) you hear the power switching components oscillate. The best
solution would be to take the notebook back to the store - however this
is no real option for me, as I want to keep it.. :-D
Some fix would be nice, preferably if it wouldn't affect power saving
(so disabling C5 state for example seems to be a bad idea)

Hi,

I have two objections to what you said:
If what you are saying is correct (I am not arguing with you on the quality of
the switches ....you might be right ...)
1) I should hear this sound in Windows, but I do not
2) I should hear the sound only when the system switches between the states,
and not all the time.

I think it is a driver issue.

It is the CPU being woken up 1000 times a second, thus switching between the
states indeed this often. You can either use HZ - modifying patch or a patch
making the system "tickless" to avoid these sounds. Both patch types are
quite / very experimental, however.

This is great!
Can you tell me where I can get those patches from?

Out of curiosity, Is this a faulty CPU?
Could you explain what you mean when you say to make the system "tickless"?

Thank you

If in the file include/asm-i386/param.h, I change the
#ifdef __KERNEL__
# define HZ 1000 /* Internal kernel timer frequency */
# define USER_HZ 100  /* .. some user interfaces are in "ticks" */
# define CLOCKS_PER_SEC  (USER_HZ) /* like times() */
#endif

to
#ifdef __KERNEL__
# define HZ 100 /* Internal kernel timer frequency */
# define USER_HZ 100  /* .. some user interfaces are in "ticks" */
# define CLOCKS_PER_SEC  (USER_HZ) /* like times() */
#endif

will it do the trick or will I make a mess?
Can I experiment with different values? I read that RedHat uses HZ=512

I don't know exactly, however IIRC there are some issues if you do only
this.

The latest dynamic tick patch can be found at

http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/4/8/54

but it might still be on the bleeding side of the warm fuzzy feeling of
being on the bleeding edge of kernel development.

Thanks,
