Hello Kristen,

does it make sense for me to patch? I meen, if you want me to dmesg, I
need a clean boot. But the panic occurs on boot. Since your patch makes
nothing but logging, this makes less sense for me.
And what is that dock thing, could my WOL on S3 and NIC problem also
have something to do with that?

Btw.: Len, I've compiled the 2.6.16.18 kernel last night, with and
without your latest acpi-release. The result was, with patch the system
woke up one time and the second time it died, without your patch the
system died the very first time sending a magic packet. Funny, but
keyboard and powerbutton are always working.

Regards,

Andreas

Hello Kristen,

your last patch booted fine. And I've also managed to compile nvidias
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8756-pkg1 driver. There were two little patches
needed in order to compile against mm. But these patches seems to break
S3, now S3 doesn't work at all with nvidias closed source drivers.
Even more bad news (well, only for me I guess ;) ). Resuming from S3 in
single user mode w/o nvidias driver, using video post works with
powerbutton and keyboard, but not with WOL. I've managed to wake up the
system up to eight times using magic packet, the nineth time the box
died. I wrote, that your first debugging patch seems to fix my WOL
problem, but now I think, that I've just been lucky.
You ask me to activate the kernel-debugging option, well this could
changed the behaviour. Perhaps I do have a kind of race condition, that
just let my box die a little bit later now.
How ever, I'm back now on 2.6.17-rc4 with Lens latest acpi-release
patch, and do have two lan0 entries in my /proc/interrupts again. Len
sais, this is bad ;) (w/o Lens apci-patch there are also two lan0
entries!). With 2.6.17-rc4-mm3 the two-lan0-entries problem was gone,
but seems not to fix the WOL problem.

Since I've enabled kernel-debugging, I resend my dmesg from the
2.6.17-rc4 with my two lan0 entries and a /proc/interrupts output. Here
it is:
--> http://as68.homeip.net/kernel/2.6.17-rc4-len/

Actually this thread ("2.6.17-rc4-mm3 - kernel panic") could be closed
with status "solved", since there is no more kernel panic with
2.6.17-rc4-mm3 anymore. Thank You Kristen!

Thank You all very much for Your support!

Regards,

Andreas

Hello Kristen,

Your patch seems also to solve my WOL-S3 problem. I've tried this from
single user mode with a video post to my graphics adapter, since I can't
use the nvidia driver(see last posting). I've tried it about 10 times.
The system woke up perfectly. Never got that far!
What is going on here?

P.S.: but I still have to patch /usr/src/linux/drivers/ide/ide.c

Hello Kristen,

I've applied your little patch on kernel 2.6.17-rc4-mm3. Booted without
panic!!
I've also turned on the kernel debug logging, since you not mentioned
any additional options to turn on, I've left the default settings.
Here is the dmesg: (Your debug output was triggered!)
--> http://as68.homeip.net/2.6.17-rc4-mm3/kristen-dmesg.out

In order to be able to test S3 I need the NVIDIA-driver to be installed.
For unknown reasons I cannot install it anymore.
--> http://as68.homeip.net/2.6.17-rc4-mm3/nvidia-installer.log

I've done that thousand times. Can't imagine I'm doing something wrong.
Any ideas?

Regards,

Andreas

Would there be a problem if the init for acpiphp ran
before the init for dock started?

(no, I don't think that use of acpi_walk_namespace
 would/could have any effect on the order)

I don't know if we have tight controls on module load order.
IIR it depends on the link order in the makefiles for
static modules, and the init scripts for loadable modules.

Len,

Sorry, cannot find it in my .config.

Same panic with and without a docking station present?

Does the panic go away with CONFIG_ACPI_DOCK=n?

Hello,

Still Kernel Panic in 2.6.17-rc4-mm3. Screen-shot here:
http://as68.homeip.net/2.6.17-rc4-mm3/
Specs same as in here: http://as68.homeip.net/2.6.17-rc4-mm2/
Just config changed a bit:
#######
CONFIG_X86_UP_APIC=y
CONFIG_X86_UP_IOAPIC=y
#######
Again a namespacing thing with ACPI.
What do I do wrong ?

Regards,

Andreas
