I tried to apply acpi-20021212-2.4.20.diff.gz
on the kernel sources 2.4.20  that are distributed with Debian;
but I got too many rejects, and indeed compilation fails

(whereas acpi-20020918-2.4.19 worked on Debian's 2.4.19)

Try it on a stock 2.4.20.  The ACPI developers can't be expected to release
patches that work on the possibly modified kernels of all available
distributions.

this is debian's problem, not the acpi list.  there is no commitment on
the part of the acpi developers to provide patches against any vendor's
kernel.

If o see the rej files, it is very easy complete the patch, You can made
by hand, if you want use that kernel and maybe you can share the final
result  patch for debian kernel.
making a diff -Nur from original kernel to final :)

Hi Andrea,

I've done the same and worked through the rejects by hand. It's not
too hard really as almost all are Makefile changes, and most concern
the same thing. FWIW I've attached my Makefiles.

Unfortunately the acpi patch not enough to get everything working,
which is something I have to thank Compaq for: Don't by Compaq!!

it seems that Debian Mantainer who is repsonsible for the kernel adds
some patches; one of the patches was on acpi, to support it being
modular; I have tried to put together an anti-patch
(but it breaks a scsi low level driver)
