You can download pscp.exe and psftp.exe from here:
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
they work great.

Windows doesn't have a native SSH or SFTP client. You can just use telnet,
it will be safe enough. Just do it at 3am when no one else is online!
</sarcasm>
But seriously folks....
PSFTP (part of the PuTTY package) works quite well, PuTTY includes SSH
client as well.
Is there a particular reason you can't use TerraTerm with SSH extension
anymore? That works well also in my experience.
As to why you were asked for root password- it is likely because you
initiated the sftp session as root, so it assumes you want to login as root
on the remote host.
You can specify another user at the command line:
[root@unix mail]# sftp username@host
Then it will log in as "username" and ask you for that user's password.
In some cases you might need to specify it like so:
[root@unix mail]# sftp -l username host
The -l (lowercase L, not I or 1) standing for "login name".
You can check the man page for sftp (on a UNIX machine of course ;) )

putty has an sftp client but I think that it is a little primitive. You
could try filezilla instead <http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/>.

RTFM sftp.

If you only wants tranfers files between a Windows host and Unix host
try winscp (http://winscp.vse.cz/eng/). It is a graphical program very
similar as LeechFTP.
