Thanks to all for replying, but:
The printing howto mainly focuses on the use of printtool (which
implies using "xwindow"). Unfortunately, I did not find any doc on the
internet
about setting up a printer without a GUI on Linux.

This is kind of distribution specific. Or at least printing subsystem
specific. If you are using a recent version of Red Hat you can use
'redhat-config-printer-tui' to configure your printer without X.
