Hello all,
Iam not an admin, but out of my interest I want to know the
significance of various "basic" configuration files and their usage in
the /etc directory. Can someone kindly send me a link that would be
useful in this aspect or share "your own" tutorial.

Thanks in advance.

A critical sampling of these files are well documented in man pages. The
following commands will get you started:

  man 5 passwd
  man 5 shadow
  man 5 services
  man 5 hosts
  man 5 inittab

You can try the same with many of the other files in /etc/.
