Hi all,
Is there someway to backup an entire linux system? I'm using the following
tar command:

tar -zcvpf /backup/fullbackup.tar.gz  --directory / --exclude=backup
--exclude=mnt --exclude=proc  --exclude=var/spool/squid .

However after awhile it stops processing the backups at 2GBs. I'm guessing
there is a size limitation to using tar.gz.  Is there some other way to
backup a 15GB partition? I don't have the luxury of a tape backup drive for
linux but I do have one for Win2K, no luck with Samba.  Currently trying to
backup a RedHat v7.1 system.  Any insight would be much appreicated.

I thought that gtar allowed bigger than 2G tarballs.  It could be a
filesystem problem.  I think the default in some Unixes is for
"nolargefiles".  That is, no files larger than 2G.  You might check
that you're not running into that.

One other option would be to break your backup into 2G chunks.  Say,
backup /home into /backup/fullbackup_home.tar.gz, etc...

ext2 did have a 2GB limit. I think it's gone away now. I run ReiserFS
and I believe that can cope with big files.

This would be a safer idea anyway. Should your large multi-gig tarfile
get corrupt, you're stuffed. But if only your home.tar file got
corrupt, you've not lost your entire backup.

There's now the question of whether you should back up to your
harddrive... Expend some cash on a DAT drive, it's worth it. It's no
good having backups on disk if your harddrive dies.

New Harddrive problems

Hi all, I have a new harddrive I want to run as a slave. I just got it,
its size is like 180gig or something. However from linux when I do a mkfs
on the device then mount it, its only 30gigs? Can anyone tell me how to
make it so it regonizes all 180gigs, I tried fdisk too.

Check there's no size limiting jumper on the drive (some have a "limit
to 30GB" jumper on them).

Also, does your BIOS see it as a 180GB drive? And does Linux when it
boots up? Look for the drive id string being printed. My PC has a 60GB
drive in it and the BIOS can't cope, so I have to disable it and let
Linux find it on its own (this doesn't work if you want to boot off it
though!).

Then, does fdisk let you make a partition > 30GB?

Subnetting Question

Hi all, I'm going to be rebuilding a network this summer that has a
subnetmask of 255.255.255.128. We need 3 subnets and my IP range is only
from xxx.xxx.xxx.0 to xxx.xxx.xxx.127. I'm wondering if it is possible to
have like 2 different subnet numbers. So like is it possible to do
something like:
xxx.xxx.109.0/26, xxx.xxx.109.64/27 and xxx.xxx.109.96/27 or do I need to
do them all as subnet mask 255.255.255.224? Thanks.

Yo Chris!

Do it all the time.  Works fine.  Just be sure you update the new
netmasks, gateways, dncp, etc. everywhere.

Hi,

First of all /27 is equivalent tu 255.255.255.224 representation of netmask.
It is possible to split your /25 subnet (255.255.255.128) in 2 /26 pieces
(255.255.255.192) from 0 to 63 and from 64 to 127 .. that would be all...
