I assume TCP/IP is running between the two, so why not use SSH
(otherwise you're back to using Kermit or uucp). I think
you can (somehow) tunnel things through it. Somehow pipe the output
from cpio (or tar) into the tunnel, and it comes out the other end and
goes onto the tape.

I just hope you don't pay for your phone calls when backing up!
