I have 3 linux machines which share a keyboard/monitor
via a simple data switch. One of them has recently
lost contact, with both keyboard and Monitor.
I don't think it's the switch, because I changed to
an empty port and got the same result.
Perhaps the video card failed, but I would expect that
I could still log, typing into the dark. Checking the
log files from a telnet session on another machine shows
that this is not happening....
This is a machine I really do not want to reboot if there
is a chance that I'll have to muck about with new parts
to get it going again.
Any advice on debugging this problem??
Jim Roy

try ripping out the switch and plugging the stuff straign into the box
or else swap with another set of ports that work on another box. Is
everything ok when you shell into it remoteley?

on "8-19-2002" "jim roy" writ:
: via a simple data switch.
... i don't know what you mean by 'simple' , but it doesn't sound
adequate for complex signal processing.
my first kvm died a little bit at a time , and more or less echos
what you describe. the fact that 'some' of it works, and you're able to
log-on via telnet, points to the switch, which handles both keyboard and
video i/o.
: This is a machine I really do not want to reboot if there
: is a chance that I'll have to muck about with new parts
: to get it going again.
i'll hazard the opinion, that you'll be a lot better of if it's the
switch rather than a concurent keyboard/video failure.
should a new switch be required, you might try this to avoid a reboot.
power down the switch, and cable up its replacement. then power up
the new device, and reset it ...

My KVM switch gets confused sometimes and only a power cycle of the KVM fixes it. On the plus side none of the boxes need reboot.

: By 'simple', I mean that it's not a KVM. It does
: no signal processing at all as far as I know.
... i really suspect that's your problem.
as i understand it, a more substantial kvm presents a constant
connection to the i/o channels that are not in use. breaking those have
been a problem for me in the past.
i think you would be well served to upgrade. both of my kvms died,
and were replaced with 'belkin' devices, and i've had absolutely no
problem with them. one caveat however. make sure the switch supports
the port types you intend to use. i.e. , a kvm ps2 via adapter to
/dev/ttySn is sorta ugly ...
