Slackware requires a machine name be assigned in network configuration
along with host name. Since the pre-existing domain didn't know about
machine names is there a way to make outgoing email appear as if it has
name@hostname rather than name@machine_name.hostname?

if you are using sendmail then go through your sendmail.cf an look for
the following:

# class E: names that should be exposed as from this host, even if we
# masquerade
# class L: names that should be delivered locally, even if we have a relay
# class M: domains that should be converted to $M
# class N: domains that should not be converted to $M
#CL root
C{E}root

# who I masquerade as (null for no masquerading) (see also $=M)
DM

you want to comment out the 'C{E}root' part and type you domain name after
the 'DM' without a space, for example:

# class E: names that should be exposed as from this host, even if we
# masquerade
# class L: names that should be delivered locally, even if we have a relay
# class M: domains that should be converted to $M
# class N: domains that should not be converted to $M
#CL root
#C{E}root

# who I masquerade as (null for no masquerading) (see also $=M)
