very stupid question about debian

i feel like a moron, but ive gone through document after document and i 
cant find the answer to a profoundly simple question:
where are static routes defined in debian????
every manual and tutorial on configuring debian gleefully skips this 
rather fundamental part of setting up a network!

route add ....
to  your /etc/rc./rc.local (i think)

I couldn't find anything either after a quick search.

If you know the route commands you need, you can then put them in a script and
get them executed at boot time by init.

for custom boot scripts.

    on RH, 'locate static-routes' offered:

	/etc/sysconfig/static-routes
	/etc/sysconfig/static-routes.save
	/etc/static-routes.10-5
	/root/temp/static-routes

    so, if debian has 'locate' AND 'static-routes' the file's name ...

try to grep for route in /etc/rc scripts

You can define aliases in this file as well:

auto eth0:5
iface eth0:5 inet static
        address 205.11.170.5
        netmask 255.255.255.0

You bring up/down the interface(s) with the ifup/ifdown command:

ifdown eth0
ifup eth0

/etc/network/interfaces is called by /etc/init.d/networking upon boot.

hi,

 The documentation is not very clear, I think I've found the answer: 
use the "up" instruction in /etc/network/interfaces, example:

iface eth0:1 inet static
        address 192.168.0.11
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        network 192.168.0.0
        broadcast 192.168.0.255
        up route add -net 192.168.1.0/24 gw 192.168.0.1


from the interface(5) man page:

up command
    Run  command  after  bringing  the interface up.  This option can 
be given multiple times for a single interface. If so, the commands will 
be executed in  order.   If  one of  the  commands fails, none of the 
others will be executed, but the interface will remain configured. 
(You can ensure a command never fails by suffixing "|| true".) 


there is also the pre-up, down, and post-down similar commands.

 And don't be so hard with you, this kind of question is not stupid.
IMHO this is much less stupid asking the question how to configure it 
properly than doing it the quick-and-dirty way ;)
